چکیده

The present study investigated the human exposure to PCBs, PBDEs and HBCDs in three Vietnamese e-waste recycling sites (EWRS) using breast milk as bioindicator. The general contamination patterns followed the order of PCBs > PBDEs > HBCDs except for some recycling workers with higher levels of PBDEs than PCBs. Compared with the urban site, human exposure to PBDEs in two EWRS was significantly higher, up to two orders of difference for a number of recyclers. These highly PBDE-exposed individuals also had significantly higher levels of HBCDs than the urban population. In EWRS, PBDE and HBCD positively correlated with each other but not with PCBs, suggesting different sources of PCBs and BFRs. Levels of pentato deca-PCBs were found to be associated with consumption of lipid-rich food whereas levels of the lower PCB congeners and BFRs were related to recycling activities. Comparing the estimated daily intake of PBDEs with their reference doses, potential health risks associated with feeding mother milk were suggested for children of Bui Dau recycler mothers. To our knowledge, these preliminary results are the first to be reported on human exposure to BFRs related to e-waste recycling in Vietnam.

Accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls and brominated flame retardants in breast milk from women living in Vietnamese e-waste recycling sites.

This study investigated the contamination status of PCBs, PBDEs and HBCDs in human and possible exposure pathways in three Vietnamese e-waste recycling sites: Trang Minh (suburb of Hai Phong city), Dong Mai and Bui Dau (Hung Yen province), and one reference site (capital city Hanoi) by analysing human breast milk samples and examining the relationships between contaminant levels and lifestyle f...

Contamination of Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) in Human Hair from E-waste Recycling Site in Vietnam

In this study, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in human scalp hair from Vietnam. Levels of PBDEs and HBCDs were significantly higher in hair of e-waste recycling workers in Bui Dau (e-waste recycling site), an e-waste recycling site than those in general residents in Bui Dau, Dong Mai (lead battery recy...

A Review of Recent Studies on Brominated Flame Retardants in the Asia-Pacific Region

Introduction Recently, environmental issues relating to brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) have become a matter of great concern due to their persistent and bioaccumulative properties and potential toxic risk to humans. Growth in interest on PBDEs has been exponential as their apparent increase in the environment...

A General Model of Dioxin Contamination in Breast Milk: Results from a Study on 94 Women from the Caserta and Naples Areas in Italy

BACKGROUND The Caserta and Naples areas in Campania Region experience heavy environmental contamination due to illegal waste disposal and burns, thus representing a valuable setting to develop a general model of human contamination with dioxins (PCDDs-PCDFs) and dioxin-like-PCBs (dl-PCBs). METHODS 94 breastfeeding women (aged 19-32 years; mean age 27.9 ± 3.0) were recruited to determine conce...

Heavy metals and organic compounds contamination in soil from an e-waste region in South China.

Heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed in 34 surface soil samples collected from farmland and 7 soil or dust samples collected from the workshops in South China, where e-waste was dismantled using primitive techniques. The results show that Cd, Cu and Hg were the most abundant metals, in particular...
